事件起因是，日前媒體試玩《刺客教條：暗影者》的多段影片曝光後，玩家發現其中一段影片中出現的神社並非虛構，而是當地真實存在的射楯兵主神社。甚至有日本網友爆料，Ubisoft 並未取得該神社的同意，便直接將其放入遊戲中。

後續，前《魔獸世界》製作人「Grummz」Mark Kern 繼續爆料，稱自己收到日本當地消息證實，射楯兵主神社已向 Ubisoft 反映，要求刪除《刺客教條：暗影者》中出現的宗教建築。Grummz 更表示，消息來源透露，該神社負責人對於遊戲中能破壞建築內部物品的設計感到不滿。
